Holiday Cheer
Is it any wonder that more people don’t hate the holidays? In fact, it amazes me that ANYONE with a conscience and/or compassion can bear this season. In a nation (world?) that establishes your basic human value by the money you possess and by your ability to be separate from and superior to your fellow humankind, the holiday season seems to have become a feeding frenzy for the greedy and narcissistic.
Every year, more and more people fall prey to the virus of separation and material one-upsmanship. Every year, more and more people who just don’t have the money are made to feel inadequate as humans because of their financial position. Every year more and more of the “Owner Class” decide that as long as they get theirs, the rest of the world doesn’t matter.
Society’s version of the Holidays is antithetical to their real meaning. Giving has become taking. Unity has become exclusion. Unconditional love has become very much conditional. Go to ANY major retail establishment and watch people treat their brothers and sisters like enemies. Watch, as they snatch up the last of something with that “Hahahaha, fuck you, I win!” gleam in their eyes. Watch as zombie cashiers and store managers spit out memorized canned pleasantries, devised to make you more comfortable handing over your money.
It’s up to us to take it back. The Government, the holidays, our humanity.
